Before eventually coming to Japan, I did the mature thing and dodged studying Japanese every chance I could get – for over a year. You have no idea how persistent and creative I can get when trying to avoid responsibility.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Much to family and friends\u2019 irritation, my default is actually to be overly excitable about things. When I found out that Miley Cyrus is dropping a new solo, I practically jumped for joy and celebrated over a can of Asahi Dry. \u201cWhoa! I\u2019m moving to a country with hieroglyphic-like writing and now have to learn an awful lot of written characters and verbal sounds just to get by daily?! Awesome! Let\u2019s do it!\u201d – is the reaction you would have expected from me. And initially, it was. It stayed that way long enough to get me through Hiragana, Katakana and some Grade 1 Level Kanji. Hurray! Now, where can I find a five-year-old to show off this newfound wisdom to? Anyway, yes. I was eager for a while. But then, as my mother would tell you, she raised a rebel. Once people started telling me how I \u201cmust\u201d study and what I \u201cshould\u201d do to \u201csurvive\u201d Japan and \u201cmaster\u201d Japanese, the drive instantly dried out. I\u2019m terribly juvenile that way. There is something very annoying about being told what to do. Unless you\u2019re getting paid for it, then that\u2019s a job – something I\u2019ve got nothing against. I am pretty convinced that the only reason I consistently did well in school was because my mother did not even bother checking my report card most of the time. She wasn\u2019t a bad parent – just abnormally chill about my educational performance. Either she had very low aspirations for my future or she knew exactly how not nagging would, in due course, help me. I may have been the one who studied Psychology in school but it seems like my mother is the one who practiced it her whole life. The short of it all is that when it comes to learning Japanese, I hit the ground running and embarked on a very short-lived sprint instead of the marathon that language learning should be.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

At age eleven, I resolved that knowing how to say \u201cI\u2019m hungry\u201d is a necessary skill for survival and now know how to do so in 18 languages (I feel like this should go in my resume. Thoughts?). With this in mind, I naively felt that I would somehow survive in Japan despite people constantly telling me otherwise. Turns out I was wrong. But when I\u2019m not stubbornly diving into things head on, my other expertise is to just smile and avoid any form of confrontation. So far, that has been my daily tactic. No idea what the heck the waitress is telling you about the stuff you are about to put into your mouth? Smile, say \u2018Wakarimashita\u2019 and get on with it. Don\u2019t know where the train you just go into is heading? Smile, say \u2018Sumimasen\u2019 as you scooch inside the train and get on with it. Baffled why the lady behind you in the cue is angrily eyeing and sizing you up? Smile, say nothing and watch your back while you get on with it. Works every time. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

However, after downing an entire red velvet with some friends a few months back, somebody had the naive suggestion that I take the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test) in July. Fine, that somebody might have been me. Whatever. You can\u2019t hold me accountable for what I do or say under the influence of chocolate. Despite having already registered for the test, I have of course completely forgotten about it up until this weekend when I saw the payment reflected in my credit card statement. <\/p>\r\n\r\n
