There is a social strata existing among the hordes of immigrants shuffling to the beat of Tokyo\u2019s metro lines. And as far as this society is concerned, I might as well be a helpless cub lost in a jungle of undecipherable symbols, alien history and impeccably placed culture gems (that double as traps) – desperate to be graced with their tutelage and much needed guidance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

Not that I mind. Not only have I always been a good student, I have also always enjoyed being one. In fact, since I dived head first into the sea of expats in Japan, I have made a habit of taking advantage of this interesting, if somewhat annoying, phenomenon. I have found that the easiest way to get your questions answered is to ask a random gaijin about it. Though you may constantly find that the answers you will get are not really the ones you were looking for – or that it would take ages of random, sometimes frosty, preaching before the response comes to its eventual conclusion. \u201cYou mean you don\u2019t know who Ichiro Suzuki is?! That\u2019s like me not knowing who Duterete is!\u201d Now that I know him, I admit the guy is awesome. But excuse me for not initially recognizing a foreign player of a sport I barely understand or not equating him to the president of my country. This \u201clesson\u201d, by the way, stemming from a question about the weather. \u201cWait, you don\u2019t know the exact number of centenarians living in the country?\u201d – somehow after a query about the country\u2019s legal age for alcohol consumption. Oh, you\u2019ll learn about all the Sakura species there is and the number of islands in the country to the dot – but only if you are willing to sit through the outburst of feigned surprise and visits to dear old Google to prove their point.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

But if I fail to get into a passionate exchange about where the best sushi in town can be found (You don\u2019t know?! How long have you been here?!) or the history of Christianity in the country, spare me your bored sigh and self-righteous accusation of ignorance and \u201clack of interest\u201d in \u2018assimilating\u2019.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
