All I want is to wake up every day with perfect hair, consume copious amounts of junk food without getting fat and spend my every weekend marathoning Criminal Minds. Oh, and world peace! I don\u2019t know about you but I don\u2019t think that\u2019s asking for too much.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In fact, I think it is in the simplest of things and the most unexpected of circumstances – a Friday dinner for example, with wonderful people who share your love for learning, good conversation and good beer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

In an effort to bring students together for a celebration of camaraderie and, apparently, to find Mr. Nakanishi some friends in Tokyo, Brighture recently organized a gathering. Before I say anything more, let me have you know that having this marvellous guy as a friend would be an absolute delight – just be sure that you have the tolerance for his excessive curry consumption and perpetually sunny disposition. In the homey KOOP Cafe of scenic Nakameguro, I had the pleasure of sharing stories and toasts with our remarkable graduates – ending the night with a lot of learnings. The first of which is that I should wear a placard the next time I attend one of these gatherings. Hopping from one group to another, I was asked to (not that I minded) recap every detail of how I met my husband, when I started living in Tokyo, which places I have visited, how my wedding went, where I live, what I have been doing (the answer to which is an embarrassing head scratch and a whisper of \u2018..watching movies\u2019) and what Japanese food I like. I am actually tempted to prepare and distribute censored copies of my planner and diary the next time I meet with students.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

I also learned that every great pursuit requires astounding effort. Hearing how difficult it is to maintain a decent English education while living in Tokyo and the work that graduates have to put up in order to continue learning is truly inspiring. Labouring for no less than ten hours a day, facing gruelling commutes and meeting tremendous job demands, they still make it a point to spend hours honing their English skills. I, on the other hand, respond to my husband\u2019s every effort of communicating to me in Japanese with \u2018\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u3057\u3083\u3079\u308c\u306a\u3044\u2019 – probably the only Japanese sentence I have mastered so far (other than \u2019\u304a\u8179\u3059\u3044\u305f\u2019).<\/p>\r\n\r\n

But then, last Friday also taught me that every great pursuit is a merry adventure. It would bring you to places you never thought existed, help you build friendships with people you never knew you would meet and fuel dreams you never thought you would achieve. It is astounding to realize that on that cold spring night, in a cute cafe in the busiest Japanese city, people came together – people whose paths are now intertwined because of the love for a language. <\/p> \r\n\r\n
