I knew EXACTLY what a witch looked like by the time I was six. She had crazy eyes that were dark as night, always peering through the curtain of scraggy hair that framed her scarred face. She walked with a limp but the Earth shook with every step of her one good leg. She had a voice that roared like thunder, constantly shouting \u201cHawa! Hawa!\u201d (Go away! Go away!) as she shooed people away. Her name was Mrs. Alice. And she lived in a decaying shack on a tiny patch of land not far from the house I grew up in. <\/p> \r\n\r\n

The land really was just a dusty bowl of sand that seemed to bear nothing but the wildest and most stubborn weeds even throughout the rainiest Junes of my childhood. Then again, my own gang of troublemakers would always find a corner to turn into a fort of discarded wood planks or a palace of carton boxes where we would \u2018cook\u2019 fallen leaves in our tin can pots. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

Sometimes, when the sun was particularly dazzling and the wind was blowing just right, I would race my friends to the dying star fruit tree nearby. Whoever won got treated to a 3-peso pack of salted nuts and I don\u2019t want to say that I always won but – I always won. To this day, I still mark my victories by devouring tangy, unhealthy snacks. We climbed the tree too, taking turns so that we can witness each other\u2019s \u2018signature\u2019 jumps and landings. Mine was a quick sequence of a curtsy, a pageant wave and a pirouette, ending with the sassiest wink I could muster (Yes, there was a time when I was hung up on the cute gestures of princesses and beauty queens. No, I no longer do my signature landing – at least not without alcohol in my system). <\/p>\r\n\r\n

Unless we were in a particular mood of unleashing hell in the neighborhood, we steered clear of Mrs. Alice\u2019s home – especially between the hours of one and three because everyone knew that was when she took her afternoon naps. And, with all the weight of my childhood nightmares on my shoulders I\u2019m telling you, \u2018the witch\u2019 was not one whose beauty sleep you would dare disturb. So in the summertime, when all the other kids in the neighborhood flocked daylong to our meagre territory and we would have no choice but to tiptoe near her property, we would keep our small ears on alert. With the slightest hint of an annoyed whimper coming from a slowly rousing Mrs. Alice, we would scramble as far away as we can. By the time all one hundred pounds of her exited the door, cursing between shouts of \u201cHawa! Hawa!\u201d and swinging a broom at anyone on the path, we were already outside the red zone.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

That was the playground I had as a child. A playground not very different from where most Filipinos spend their blissful early years – dirty, small, cramped and, I kid you not, sometimes right in the way of oncoming traffic. Our very our own slices of heaven. <\/p>\r\n\r\n

So the next time you pass by a playground, I hope you would remember that at six years old, I knew EXACTLY what paradise looked like. It was a spacious ground with sturdy trees guarding the edges. It had colorful swings on which I would stand and look up to the sun. Oh, and don\u2019t even get me started on the playhouse with its hidden nooks and long slides. Then there\u2019s a seesaw which I would avoid because my weight guaranteed that I stay on top unless the other kid stepped down. Instead of a dying star fruit tree, there would be a net climber which I would conquer in a matter of seconds and quickly jump from with a guaranteed perfect landing. Yes, at six years old, my paradise was one of the many \u2018typical\u2019 playgrounds strewn across Japan.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n

Now, aside from perfecting a double pirouette and mastering the art of dodging a flying broom, I have learned a lot of (useful?) skills from my time behind Mrs. Alice\u2019s shabby shack and I would not wish for any part of my childhood to be changed one bit. But the next time you pass by a playground, as you very casually have so many times before, I hope you would keep an eye out for a seemingly out-of-place twenty-three-year-old Filipino girl sitting alone on a bench, smiling to herself and looking at everything with wonder. I hope you would sit beside her, tell her about your own playground memories and listen as she recounts the long list of mischievous things she\u2019s done as a child. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\"\"\r\n
