Fine, I\u2019m not exactly known for being frugal and I have a few appalling impulse purchases under my belt. But compared to others my age, I pride myself for having an inkling of self-control when faced with an attractive bargain. My rule is simple – necessities first before the luxuries. Which is why I am thoroughly convinced that the string of Hyakuen Shops\uff08\u767e\u5186\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30d7\uff09 scattered across Japan are laced with a tinge of Voodoo. Seriously. The first time I was in one, I ended up buying (among other things) two pairs of graded eyeglasses with matching Disney-themed cases – despite having perfect 20\/20 vision. I told you. Magic.<\/p>\r\n

It is easy to see that the appeal starts with the surprising efficiency that the products possess. These wonders have functions you didn\u2019t even know you needed. Who knew I just had to have an egg timer to finally be able to serve boiled eggs? (Yes, because unlike any of you, my eggs always come out unintentionally watery.) How about a ballpoint pen that also doubles as a touch pen with just a switch of the lid? Or a stirrer that would help you wash rice without getting your hands wet and your manicure damaged? The list is endless and every new device you discover is a major delight you just can\u2019t help but grab.<\/p> \r\n\r\n

This being Japan, simply having clever features is not an adequate selling point. Of course, the \u2018Kawaii\u2019 trademark has to come into play. Any decent friend of mine can summarize my wardrobe into one word: black. Since moving here though, I\u2019ve been googly eyed for all the cute socks sold in 100 yen shops that I have stuffed my closet with them – in all colors, and weird frills and sappy designs mind you.
